Steps in Designing an Optimal Household PV System

Determine the sizing of the component used in the photovoltaic system is a vital process before purchasing and installing the photovoltaic system. It could be done via any PV design software or manual calculation. However, the process of the GCPV system sizing is basically the same. Figure below shows the referenced process flow used;

First step is to perform power system study on an existing electrical system power consumption, the reason is to never under-design or over-design a solar system based on any green-energy related schemes. From the perspective of competent person, his experience determines how best sizing (maximize) a solar system integrating different brands of PV panels and Inverters configurations. To begin, knowing the minimum DC Voltage and the maximum DC Voltage at maximum power voltage (Vmp) for PV panels is vital, this allows to estimate the acceptable range for numbers of PV Panels per string.

Subsequently, an inverter datasheet usually indicates it`s full power Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) voltage range. Via some rough calculation, the optimal number of PV panels is found within the estimated range of numbers of PV panels (above). Now, the exact number of PV panels per string is determined, then to validate the maximum power current (Imp) produced per string at 20oC and 75oC. This step is to determine the number of string can be connected to the same MPPT of an inverter.

After that, the next stage is to arrange this chosen PV system configuration on designated roof or land area. From here, the DC cable length can be estimated as well as other DC components such as fuses, Surge Protection Device (SPD), rails, clamps, clips and etc. Lastly, it is fine to conduct system analysis via software to further verify the total energy generated annually based on preset Peak Sun Hour (PSH) value. A good system design procedure shall include all endorsed design drawings, verified Test and Commission (T&C) report and other professional documentation for future system maintenance purpose.
